We Can Choose Our Response to Stress

Feb 02, 2022

The last few years have had historic levels of stress that layer the challenges of COIVD on top of the stress of normal life.

The big question: When things get stressful, can we choose to stay connected with the people around us?

When we are under pressure our brain defaults to our highest level of habit. This is often, but not always, to turn more inward and be less connected. These habits may be positive or negative behaviors, such as turning inward, avoiding, or reaching out to friends for support.

Yes, but: By being aware of our mindset, habits, and assumptions we can intentionally choose how we will respond to stress.

Our thought bubble:  Stress may be misunderstood. If we want to live a life of purpose we will encounter stress, but it can be good for you if you believe it is.

The bottom line: We get to choose how we will respond to stress, challenge, and setback. Our response can drive us to stay connected with people or turn inward and be isolated. To be resilient we have to choose to stay connected.

What's next: Here are three things you can do today to stay engaged when stress is high.

  1. Face your challenges with other people. Dispel the fear of failure and rejection and walk with other people who are willing to support you and tell you the truth with love.
  2. Work for a flow state where skill meets the level of challenge we face.
  3. Reflect on your experiences so you can celebrate success and practice gratitude.

We want to know: What can you do today to stay connected despite the challenges you face?

Today, we continue our series on the skills needed to lead a team. We started with building trust in episode 178. In this Magic in the Room episode, Hannah, Chris, and Luke discuss a new skill: creating an environment of commitment and accountability. The core idea in this conversation is that people can only be accountable if they know what they are committed to. People can hold themselves accountable once we have a common understanding of commitments. To download the free guide that goes with this episode, subscribe below:
